Brainstorming to Fielding Technology: Overcoming the Valley of Death
Ms. Casey Gilbertz has been serving as the Civilian Deputy to Principal Assistant for Acquisition since October 2023. Ms. Gilbertz has an Advanced Certification in Program Management from Defense Acquisition University, and 15 years of program management experience. She graduated in 2009 from University of Maryland Baltimore County with Bachelors in Physics and acquired her Project Management Professional Certification in 2013.
Starting as a college intern at the Headquarters of National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Ms. Gilbertz found her calling in project management. While at NASA, Ms. Gilbertz streamlined budget, performance, and financial reporting data collection to ensure leadership and external reports had accurate and actionable information. Ms. Gilbertz supported NASA acquiring the first clean financial audit in 2010, after struggling for a decade. Ms. Gilbertz then transitioned into medical defense community and has spent the last 10 years working on various projects. In 2013, she supported the Emerging Infectious Disease Therapeutics (EID Tx) program within the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD) execute one of the largest phase 3 clinical trials for a broad spectrum influenza therapeutic. In 2015 Ms. Gilbertz supported the JPEO-CBD in urgently delivering Next Generation Diagnostics Systems to military users for the Emergency Use Authorization for Ebola outbreak. In 2018 while working for Project Manager for Medical Devices Ms. Gilbertz piloted a decision review process for analyzing new emerging set requirements. This process involved scrutinizing affordability and analyzing new acquisition strategies. She continued to further these innovations when she took over as Product Manager for Medical Devices Assemblage Management in 2019, by further scrutinizing set modernizations to ensure cost, schedule, and performance are aligned and transparent in the budget process. In 2021, Ms. Gilbertz was selected as Deputy Project Manager for Warfighter Deployed Medical Systems where she implemented best practices into medical acquisition program management.
Ms. Gilbertz is a member of the Army Acquisition Corp. She has received the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, Civilian Service Commendation Medal, and Special Service Award.
